No Sleeves, No Problem
STYLING YOUR SLEEVELESS ‘LITTLE BLACK DRESS’ FOR EVERY OCCASION
By: Toria Carter
Karl Lagerfeld, the late fashion icon of Chanel, once stated “One is never overdressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress.” His words still hold true to this day as the LBD is considered a timeless staple piece that continues to evolve and stay relevant with the times as the years go on. First introduced to the fashion scene by Coco Chanel in a 1926 American Vogue cover story, the LBD has since skyrocketed to fame and notoriety. In 1961, Audrey Hepburn wore the iconic Givenchy LBD in the opening scene of the romantic comedy film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. This garment is often regarded as one of the most iconic items of clothing in twentieth century film — right next to Marilyn Monroe’s white ivory cocktail dress from The Seven Year Itch.
One of the main reasons the dress is loved by so many is its ability to look amazing on everyone. Whether you’re adding a bold statement accessory or going for a more modern all black look, styling a LBD and dressing for the occasion is so much easier than it may seem. The upcoming MARRISA WILSON NY Fall 2019 collection features the Lea Dress (pictured above, styled with a heeled ankle boot) as well as the Ali Tee Dress in black. Both pieces allow for either a dressed up or dressed down look.
In the Office:
Model, Ashley Graham, is seen rocking the perfect work day outfit as she pairs her sleeveless LBD with a crisp white blazer. Feel free to opt for a more comfortable shoe as stilettos may not bode well after an 8 hour work day.
International runway model, Liu Wen, integrated class with sex appeal in this low-cut, high-low LBD. The strappy heels, mini clutch and bold red lip complete the look for a romantic candlelit dinner or drinks at an upscale lounge.
The Duchess of Sussex sported a palace-appropriate ensemble that could easily double as wedding attire. The chic cut in the neckline along with the pointed toe shoes and mini clutch convey a level of regalness that doesn’t require a royal title. Including a pop of color in the accessories wouldn’t hurt either.
This sleeveless black piece is far more casual than the previously noted outfits, ideal for a super laid-back hangout or running errands around town. The actress and former beauty queen, Priyanka Chopra, showcased this effortless look with minimal accessories and block heeled loafers — comfy alternatives are sneakers or sandals.
