TRACKS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK

BY: TORIA CARTER

With summer officially in full swing, new albums and singles seem to be emerging with every week that passes— a lot of them equally as hot as the temperatures outside! The R&B and Hip-Hop charts have especially been blowing up these past few weeks with new music from so many of our longtime faves. Keeping up with it all can be draining, but we promise to only mention music we’d include in our own playlist. If you haven’t already, check out some of the albums listed below and let us know in the comments if you agree with our top picks or if you have other songs that you’re playing on repeat this summer.

CASE STUDY 01

DANIEL CAESAR

GENRE: R&B/SOUL

RELATED ARTIST: H.E.R. ; BRENT FAIYAZ; DVSN

Following up the success with his debut album, Freudian, in 2017, Canadian-born artist Daniel Caesar has succeeded yet again in delivering soft and soulful sounds to our ears. If you enjoyed the smooth tunes of his first album, you’ll definitely like what the 24-year-old has in store for you this time around. Due to Caesar’s controversial comments made earlier in the year, album sales haven’t been the best. He has since issued an apology but the damage seems to already be done. Hopefully the singer/songwriter gets his act together soon because he truly is a talented artist and it’d be a shame to see it all go to waste.

RACKS (FEAT. YBN CORDAE)

H.E.R.

GENRE: R&B/SOUL

RELATED ARTIST: ELLA MAI; SUMMER WALKER; SABRINA CLAUDIO

This new release from contemporary R&B artist Gabi Wilson, better known as H.E.R., can be described as a chill and sensual track with a trap beat overlay. The Grammy-winning artist didn’t hold back when producing this laid-back hit, and she had some help too. It features up-and-coming hip-hop artist YBN Cordae, to create a perfect blend that matches the overall theme of the tune. The song seemingly dropped just in time as we can see ourselves bumping this one for the rest of summer.

DIASPORA

GOLDLINK

GENRE: HIP-HOP/RAP

RELATED ARTIST: SMINO; SIR; SABA

As the title suggests, ‘Diaspora’ is an eclectic collection of Goldlink’s latest creations pulling inspiration from not only black communities across the nation, but musical sounds and influences from all across the world. The album pays homage to the rapper’s hometown of Washington, D.C. by featuring an array of local DMV talent like Bibi Bourelly, Lil Nei and WaveIQ. Plenty of other familiar voices like Khalid, Tyler the Creator and Pusha T can be heard over the progression of tracks as well. The 40 minute listen will take you from his traditional flow of hip-hop to reggae to afro beats and even a song featuring Chinese rapper, Jackson Wang.

THINKIN BOUT ME (SINGLE)/ WHO KNEW (SINGLE)

CHLOE X HALLE

GENRE: R&B/SOUL

RELATED ARTIST: SOLANGE; H.E.R. ; SZA

Disney Channel’s newest princess and her older sister recently gifted us with the double release of these two new singles. The tracks, which differ completely in tone and feel, don’t disappoint as the Grown-ish stars wow us yet again with their incredible vocal abilities. The dynamic melody of ‘Who Knew’ as well as the hip-hop influenced sounds of ‘Thinkin Bout Me’ make for a superb addition to your summer playlist. The songs are set to be used in their Freeform show sometime in the next few weeks.
