MWNY HIGHLIGHTS | CURLS, WEDDINGS, AND MORE!
FAVORITE MARRISA WILSON NY MEMORIES
As we’re gearing up for the launch of our FALL 2019 Collection, we’re making a lot of great changes to improve your experience with us. We’ve restructured our business to operate as a direct-to-consumer company in order to better respond to your needs and increase our sense of community. We’ve redesigned our website to improve your digital shopping experience and started our new blog, WOMAN’S PREROGATIVE – a resource for style, inspiration, lifestyle and empowerment. I’m incredibly proud of our new direction, but I also wanted to take the time to reflect back on our journey to this point and highlight some of our favorite memories from the past.
NATURALLY CURLY’S TEXTURE ON THE RUNWAY ATLANTA EDITION WITH SMOOTH ‘N’ SHINE
In March of 2018, we had the incredible opportunity to style looks for Naturally Curly’s Texture on the Runway: Atlanta Edition. With outfits pulled from the MWNY Collection, we represented six different archetypes of women: The Student, The Teacher, The Afro-Punker, The Artist, The Mother and the Corporate Conqueror. Each look was completed with six different ways to rock your ‘do, from straight to curly, to kinky, to wavy, to loc’d up! These dope hair looks we’re styled by Larry Sims and Mimi Johnson. Some of our favorites included our Farrah Velvet Jumpsuit, Velvet Jayne Bomber, Valerie Wrap Dress, and Shelly Blazer.

2. FALL 2017 VALERIE WRAP DRESS FEATURED IN SPIKE LEE’S BLACKKKLANSMAN
It’s really exciting to be able to point out one of your dresses on the big screen—and that’s what happened for us last year. Our FALL 2017 Valerie Wrap dress was featured in the dance scene in Spike Lee’s 2018 BLACKKKLANSMAN. Set in the early 1970s, John David Washington plays Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The movie was incredibly dope (and won many Oscars!) so if you somehow haven’t seen it, definitely check it out—and keep an eye out for the dress!
3. WEDDING SEASON! CUSTOM WEDDING DRESS FOR STEPHANIE LAURETTA
It was such a pleasure to design a custom wedding dress for my friend Stephanie, aka @BeautyByLee. Seeing the dress turn from concept, to sketch, to lace and materials, to reality was a beautiful and fulfilling process . I was honored to attend the ceremony and share in this day filled with love for Stephanie and Vincent.
Stephanie knew exactly what she wanted her dress to be and we worked closely together from the beginning. She gave me a great inspiration deck with photos of how she wanted every aspect of the dress - from the sleeves, to the back, to the lace, to the veil.
We worked with my tailor, who performed her magic on the pattern, and we took careful measurements of Stephanie to make sure the dress fit her perfectly. I had cut out the lace and hand-placed them on Stephanie’s body so that the layout was exactly what she wanted. I hand-embroidered each piece of lace to her dress and to her veil. The veil was attached to her headband with shank buttons so that it could be removed for the ceremony, leaving her with the custom, handmade headband.
Here’s to many more years of life and love, Stephanie and Vincent!!
